Common questions

How does AudioCast Relay capture audio from a Chrome tab?

AudioCast Relay uses Chrome's built-in tab-capture API to read the audio output of the tab you choose, without installing any virtual audio driver or third-party software on your computer. Once captured, the audio is encoded and sent over a direct WebRTC peer-to-peer connection to any device that scans the extension's QR code. Because the connection is peer-to-peer, the audio stream does not pass through or get stored on a media server operated by us or anyone else.

Do I need to create an account to use it?

No. AudioCast Relay is designed to work without sign-ups, logins, or linked email addresses. Each streaming session generates a temporary room code shown as a QR code in the extension popup. Anyone who scans that code within the session window can connect as a receiver; closing the tab or stopping the stream ends the session and invalidates the code.

Is the free version limited?

The free version supports a single active receiver, standard audio quality, and streaming sessions of up to four hours — enough for most everyday use cases like listening to a video on your phone while your laptop stays on your desk. AudioCast Pro adds support for up to ten simultaneous receivers, a 48kHz Opus hi-res audio mode, a three-band equalizer with compression, session recording, and live transcription, aimed at classrooms, studios, and multi-device setups.

What browsers and devices are supported?

The extension itself runs on any desktop browser built on the Chromium engine, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Brave. On the receiving side, any modern mobile or desktop browser that supports WebRTC — which covers the vast majority of phones and tablets released in the last several years — can open the stream after scanning the QR code, with no app installation required.

What if the audio cuts out or the connection won't start?

Most connection issues come down to strict network configurations rather than the extension itself. AudioCast Relay first attempts a direct peer-to-peer connection, and automatically falls back to our encrypted TURN relay if your network or router blocks that path, so both devices don't necessarily need to be on the same local network. If a stream disconnects mid-session, reopening the extension popup and pressing Start Streaming again will generate a fresh room code and reconnect the receiver.
